A Life Coach Can't Tell You How to Live
At Wilde Spire Integrative Coaching Solutions, we believe coaching is a collaborative process designed to help people gain clarity, overcome obstacles, and move toward meaningful goals. A coach doesn’t diagnose mental health conditions, provide therapy, or make decisions for you.
Instead, a coach asks thoughtful questions, offers perspective, challenges unhelpful assumptions about your particular situation, and helps you create practical steps towards a realistic solution.
Coaching Isn’t About Having All the Answers
One of the biggest misconceptions about coaching is that coaches possess some special insight into how everyone should live.
Wilde Spire Integrative Coaching Solutions doesn’t endorse this.
Every person’s values, goals, experiences, and circumstances are unique, and a good coach doesn’t hand you a blueprint. They help you discover your own.
What Does a Life Coach Actually Do?
A life coach may help you:
Clarify goals and priorities.
Navigate life transitions.
Build confidence and self-awareness.
Develop healthier habits.
Improve accountability.
Explore purpose and meaning.
Strengthen decision-making.
Identify obstacles that keep you feeling stuck.
To support this process, coaches often use evidence-informed tools such as guided conversations, reflective exercises, worksheets, questionnaires, values assessments, goal-setting frameworks, and practical activities designed to help you gain insight and put new ideas into practice.
These tools aren’t tests with “right” or “wrong” answers. They’re simply ways to organize your thinking and uncover patterns into a tangible form you can easily look back on.
Think of it like assembling a piece of furniture. When all of the parts are spread out in front of you, it’s much easier to understand how each piece fits together than if you were trying to figure it out after everything was already assembled.
Coaching works in a similar way. By separating your goals, values, habits, strengths, and challenges into individual pieces, you can better understand how they influence one another. Once you can clearly see the parts, it becomes much easier to intentionally build the life you want.
Is Life Coaching Legitimate?
Yes, and it is important to note that like many professions, the quality of coaches varies considerably.
Coaching does not require a medical license in the same way psychology, counseling, or medicine do, so it’s important to understand who you’re working with and what their qualifications are. However, the coaching profession does have recognized certifying bodies that establish educational standards. ethical guidelines, and professional certifications.
That’s why choosing a coach deserves the same thoughtfulness you would give any other professional.
What Makes a Good Life Coach?
A qualified coach should:
Clearly explain what coaching is—and what it isn’t.
Respect the limits of coaching and refer clients to licensed professionals when appropriate.
Hold a recognized coaching certification and complete professional training from a recognized institution.
Follow ethical standards.
Be transparent about their methods.
Help clients think for themselves rather than creating dependence.
Should empower you—not become someone you feel you can’t function without.
Maintain relationships with trusted therapists, physicians, recovery programs and other community resources to ensure clients receive the right support when appropriate.
What Coaching is Not
Coaching is not:
Psychotherapy
Medical treatment
Crisis intervention
Financial advising
Legal advising
A substitute for licensed mental health care
At Wilde Spire Integrative Coaching Solutions, we believe making the right referral is part of ethical coaching. If your needs fall outside the scope of coaching, you will be referred to a qualified therapist, physician, or another licensed professional.
Who Benefits from Coaching?
People often seek coaching when they:
Feel stuck.
Want more direction.
Face major life changes.
Want greater purpose.
Need accountability.
Know they’re capable of more but aren’t sure what the next step looks like.
How Do I Know If Coaching Is Right for Me?
A few questions:
Are you generally functioning well but feel stuck or directionless?
Do you want accountability while working toward meaningful goals?
Are you willing to reflect honestly?
If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, coaching may be a good fit.
